Welcome Jerry

Give us a quick rundown of what Awana is, its purpose, and what kids do

If a family wanted to try it out, what's the pitch for trying it out for a year?

If a kid is in Awana, say 5-10 years, how will that change their life?/ Or alternatively what is a child like on the other side? / Or give me an Awana success story for the life of a kid

Volunteering, you have a pitch for that?

Grade Ross and his team. S-tier, A-tier, B-tier...

Pray for kids

Jerry, you have national role in Awana, tell us about that

And you're in the middle of restructuring and recruiting, yes, tell us about that

If people want to an Awana missionary or know someone what do they do?

Are you fully funded

[Normally] Prayer for Church, Pray for Jerry

*******

Psalms of Ascent, playlist for travels 3x a year for festivals

OT is not only the source of the religious requirements of Jews, also culture

I want to warn you now.  This Psalm and this sermon might touch a nerve.  There might be some controversial topics

Joy of location centered worship

Seeking good things for Jerusalem

20 years ago, it’d be a laugh line that those we’re controversial

And I’ll try and be as delicate as I can be

You know me, I want us to have a good time, my hope is that we enjoy church, the time we spend together , and with God

I hope to challenge people, but I also hope to encourage and comfort, and let you I’m no great shakes

Let’s get into it

Read
v.1,2

Such a statement of joy, a love for coming to Jerusalem for these feasts and excitement for being there, and doing it with family and friends

Read v.1,2 again

I don’t know what it’s like for you, but holidays, and the more they’re the same, the more I love them.  I want the same menu every Thanksgiving.  And it always special to me when we had Uncle Frank’s and Aunt Cathy’s in Livermore, CA.  We hardly went there any other day, but that’s the spot on the planet where you have Thanksgiving in my mind

We don’t do these

We kind of have Advent, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Easter, worship nights like these, combine place, tradition, religious practice

For some of you these are special times
For me they are special times

Others come on out, join us, the water is warm.  I went to our last few worship nights we’ve had, some of the most joyous times I’ve had in this church, before that I was like eh, I guess I should go, whatever, now I crave it

I totally affirm that ou can’t be here every Sunday.

Now each Monday Brian asks how Sunday went

Often felt like Sunday

But some days are electric, the music’s poppin, it’s areal joy to see people, you  gotta be here.  Some days, this is where the party is.  I can’t predict those ahead of time, you have to be here

Church is pretty awesome, 2K years all around the world joining setting aside the first day of the week, often under persecution

Baptism, communion since Crist

I think of the Psalm, and I see you living it out, joining your group here to worship together

I see groups of you attending together

Ps 27:4
Read One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the [a]beauty of the Lord
And to [b]meditate in His temple.

Ps 84:10a
For a day in Your courtyards is better than a thousand elsewhere.
Couldn’t even go in the building

We’ve done two verses, we have 7 more

Read v.3
Everyone has a different theory on what this verse means

Read v.4
This is covering what we already know, journey to the feasts

v.5
Now we could talk about David and his line, and the fact that Jesus comes from it to rule all day.  We won’t
Continued glories of Jerusalem, the seat not only of religion and culture, but government

People vary in how much government excites them.

When I was 27 my family took a vacation to Washington DC.  I loved it!  Here’s a picture of my youngest sister and I.  We saw a bunch of the sites around DC.
Not pictured is our middle sibling because she was having her dream vacation, reading by the hotel pool.  She was 25, past the you’re going to go see the Lincoln monument, and you’re going t like it.  We lived over 400 miles from home at this point

And so we get the verses about praying for Jerusalem and seeking the good of Jerusalem.

OK, Jerusalem obviously isn’t even the capital of Israel it’s Tel-Aviv now, & there’s no state religion

But people are becoming more and more divided on Israel.

You know me, I’m from somewhere far more controversial, California.  And I love California.  I’ve lived here 11 years, and I’m a Californian.  And I’ll die a Californian.

Now I know California here is political word, or a word that signifies the loss of quality of life here in Idaho.

Now, am I pro construction?  Don’t hate me, I am.

But, Do I use California as a political word?  When I say “I love California!”  Do I mean it as a political statement?  Absolutely not!  May it never be!

I love the land, and the places that hold my memories, and my family

When I say I love California, the place and the politics are decoupled for me.

And when it comes to Jerusalem and Israel, I hope you can decouple politics from the land God loves.

Is it OK to criticize politics, the government, and leaders, even the religious leaders in Israel?

Yes.  That appears in Scripture.  It’s called the prophets.  And the histories. And the Gospels.

But this isn’t a sermon on politics.  This a sermon about tradition, and joy, and worshiping God together, and here, a place, a prayer for peace, literally The City of Peace.

Read 6-9

God has done something interesting.  He has fixed His name, His reputation, His stamp of approval on a physical place, Jerusalem

1 Kings 11:36

But to his son I will give one tribe, so that My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name.
It is the center of the world.  It is where the Gospel emanates from to go to the ends of the earth Acts 1:8

Back in the OT
Psalm 132:13-14, in the OT Zion is synonymous with Jerusalem

For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it as His dwelling place.
14 “This is My resting place forever;
Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

Now many say all that is OT stuff.  We are in NT times.  The church is now God’s people.  We have inherited (spiritually) the promises to Israel

Very common view

Israel didn’t even exist from 70-1948, you might see how that view arises.

Yes, Israel exists today, but it’s still a viable view.  I don’t hold it, but then there’s nothing in Christianity about having to agree with me.

That thing about Jerusalem being the place God will associate His name with, in 2 Chron 33:4,7, it says explicitly that the choice is forever

Micah 4:1-2

And it will come about in the last days
That the mountain of the house of the Lord
Will be established [a]as the chief of the mountains.
It will be raised above the hills,
And the peoples will stream to it.
2 Many nations will come and say,
“Come and let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord
And to the house of the God of Jacob,
So that He may teach us about His ways,
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For from Zion will go forth the law,
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

I think there’s a place for Jerusalem still.

I also think the mandate is still in place.  I think the promise to Abraham is still in effect.  Blessing those who bless and cursing those who curse.

Genesis 17:7
I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your [a]descendants after you throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your [b]descendants after you.

As for why don’t we see all of the promises being fulfilled to Israel at various times?  Sean McDowell was interviewing a scholar who said the promise is eternal, not always available.  He was talking to a guy who runs a street evangelism ministry in Israel, he pointed out God always unfolds his plans in stages.

So I would encourage you to pray for Israel, for peace there, for prosperity there, and yes, and turning to Jesus there.

Pray
And the peace of God, which surpasses all [f]comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
